  • The Witch Nowadays is a bold, cinematic oil painting that reimagines the figure of the witch through a contemporary, domestic lens. A woman lies partially inside an open oven, her expression calm yet distant, holding a spoon as though in ritual or trance. The oven becomes both a literal and symbolic porta: echoing Sylvia Plath’s biography and the archetypal witch’s shapeshifting passageways: inviting readings of both despair and transformation. Rendered in a chiaroscuro style, the kitchen is dramatically lit: a stage of glowing warm tones and deep shadows where domesticity becomes a realm of mystery and power.

The kitchen, often seen as a space of labor and confinement, is recast here as a kingdom: a witch’s lair where alchemy and survival intersect. A still life in the foreground: a radish atop an angel food cake, functions as both offering and symbol: fertility, appetite, and surreal displacement. The juxtaposition of the mundane and the magical invites viewers to reconsider the psychic weight of domestic roles, the blurred line between nourishment and ritual, and the inherited narratives of women and witches.

Through its theatrical lighting, layered symbolism, and haunting calm, The Witch Nowadays becomes a meditation on the invisible transformations that happen in ordinary spaces, and the lingering presence of magic, myth, and memory in the lives of women.
